By Olivia Brown, Podcast Featuring Nate Scholz
Before 2023 was out, I sat down with my former trivia co-host from Starr Hill Brewery, Nate Scholz, to talk about why hosting trivia is a great choice. In November 2021, Nate and I both began hosting trivia for Starr Hill at the two local Charlottesville Tap Rooms – I started out in Crozet and Nate was Downtown. We didn’t quite know what we were getting ourselves into and eventually we both were hosting together at Starr Hill Downtown. By mid-2023, we had to cap the number of teams at forty and were turning people away because there were no more open tables. People even elected to stand and play. So, how did this all happen and what’s the benefit of it?
First and foremost, we both enjoyed writing the questions, and bringing people together on a Wednesday night. So for us, it was fun. One of the best parts of our trivia night though was the fact that we wrote the questions ourselves. We brought our own voices into trivia and didn’t sound like we were reading from a document sent to us that day.
As hosts, it’s the people who come that make it the most enjoyable. Nate loves reading the team names that people come up with, regardless of how cheesy or inappropriate they are, and I always love talking a little bit of smack on the mic. Either way, trivia night is a fun way to bring people together. Nate summed it up well: “It's just a great community event that I think helps bring different members of the community together that maybe wouldn't come together otherwise.”
Sometimes all you need on a weeknight is to exercise your brain and get it through those mid-week woes. Trivia night is a great way for people to bring their friends together, grab some dinner or a drink, and play a game on a day where they might usually do nothing. So why trivia? My though is instead, why not?
Play Trivia with Olivia on Tuesday nights at 7pm at Starr Hill Crozet, or Wednesday nights at 7pm at Starr Hill in Downtown Charlottesville. To check out Nate Scholz’s trivia night at the Southern Café and Music Hall, click here to register.
